What Is Earlobe Reconstruction Surgery?

Torn or stretched earlobes can be the result of wearing heavy earrings, gauges (a popular piercing method that stretches the earlobes), or trauma. Stretched earlobes can affect the appearance of your ears and interfere with your ability to wear earrings. Luckily, your torn or stretched earlobes can be repaired surgically.

WHAT IS EARLOBE RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY

Earlobe reconstruction surgery is a procedure that repairs torn or stretched earlobes, returning them to their natural appearance. Candidates for this surgery include:

  • • Those with a split or tear in their earlobe as a result of an accidental pull on an earring.
  • • Someone who had an ear piercing placed too close to the rim of the earlobe.
  • • An individual who has stretched earlobes as a result of gauging or wearing heavy earrings for a long period of time.
  • • Someone who has had earlobe trauma.

EARLOBE RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY PROCEDURE

Earlobe reconstruction surgery is an outpatient procedure performed while the patient is under local anesthesia. The tear is repaired by the surgeon, who removes any excess skin and/or tissue and then stitches the earlobe back together. The result is typically a smaller, symmetrical earlobe. Sometimes, this surgery may be combined with a dermal filler to restore the natural volume of the earlobe after the surgery. The surgeon can re-pierce the ears after the surgical site has healed, usually after about 3 months.

RECOVERY FROM EARLOBE RECONSTRUCTION SURGERY

Some may experience mild discomfort after the procedure. Your surgeon will provide you with the proper recovery regimen, including how to care for your surgical area.   Sutures are typically removed about a week after the surgery.

After a few months, patients may have their ears re-pierced and continue wearing earrings, as long as the scar is not re-pierced. Choose an area on the earlobe that is located slightly away from the scar, and wear lightweight or stud earrings to avoid tears or stretching.
