Is a Breast Augmentation Right for You?

Breast augmentation is typically the most popular cosmetic surgery procedure for women. But as with any other type of surgery, this procedure isn’t right for everyone. If you’re thinking about having surgery to enlarge your breasts, make sure you know what to expect and whether you’re a good candidate first.

WHAT BREAST AUGMENTATION CAN DO FOR YOU

One of the most common reasons women have breast augmentation is to increase the size of their breasts. Depending on the size of the implants you choose, you can go up anywhere from one cup size to several. But the size is not the only aspect of the breasts this surgery can change. It can also affect the shape and how the breasts lie on your frame. Some women even have breast augmentation to even out their breasts when one is noticeably smaller than the other. So whether you want a different size or shape or a more balanced appearance for your breasts, look into breast augmentation.

WHO THIS SURGERY IS BEST FOR?

Your desire to change the appearance of your breasts is a good sign that breast augmentation may be for you, but it’s not the only qualification. You also need to be at least 18 years old to ensure your breasts are done developing. In addition, you should be physically healthy. But your mental outlook is important, too. You need to have realistic expectations, which means knowing that the surgery will alter your breasts, not your entire life. So if you’re expecting breast augmentation to make you famous, well-liked or automatically happier, you might be disappointed and should avoid this surgery. That being said, the vast majority of women who go into the procedure with realistic expectations are satisfied with their choice.

THE BASICS OF SURGERY

When you have this procedure, the surgeon inserts implants under your breast tissue in order to change the size and shape of your breasts. Before surgery, you and your doctor will discuss the size you want the implants to be, which type of implants you want and where the incisions will be located. The procedure typically takes an hour or two.

WHAT TO EXPECT AFTER THE PROCEDURE

Immediately after surgery, you will be  dressed in a support bra.  You will need to have a friend or family member drive you home which will be shortly after you are awake and alert. Once you arrive home, you’ll be expected to rest for the first few days allowing you to slowly get back to your normal routine as the pain and swelling subside and healing occurs. Please note, it is important  that you avoid  heavy lifting and strenuous exercise for a few weeks to ensure the area has a chance to heal as your implants settle into place. During this time, you will see your doctor for your follow-up appointments.
